Richard Arlen Lewis

Richard Arlen Lewis, 84, of Harkers Island, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at Carteret General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Thursday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Harkers Island with Joel Hancock, Bishop Kevin Nelson and Erik Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery.

Richard peacefully passed away the morning of March 4. He was a native of Harkers Island, a place he would always call home. He graduated from Harkers Island School and attended Atlantic Christian College. He worked with his father, Capt. Dick Lewis, on a dredge boat. Afterleaving the dredge boat he enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard. In 1962 he was given a medical discharge. At which time he began working at Cherry Point's Central Heating Plant until his retirement in 1989.
He was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints holding many positions such as: Second Counselor to the Bishop, Ward Clerk, teacher of MIA, and Sunday school teacher. He and wife, Ida, were sealed in the Washington, DC Temple on Nov. 11, 1978. He had the honor of baptising both of his grandchildren. He always said , "E was his eye and Sweets was his heart." Many an afternoon you could find him playing horseback down the hall with both children on his back. Many years later the great-grandchildren started arriving---Amelia, Charlotte and then Clark; but he was past the horseback riding days at this point. He met Ida at Shell Point. They dated for five years. They were married in Beaufort on Nov. 12,1959 He was an excellent provider for his immediate family and the many neices and nephews and their familes.Ice cream was a favorite item to deliver!

He is survived by his wife, Ida Lewis of Morehead City; son, James Alonza "Al" Lewis of Morehead City; two grandchildren, Erik A. Lewis and wife Elizabeth of Morehead City and Allison L. Struyk and husband Russell of Beaufort; five great-grandchildren, Amelia Lewis, Charlotte Lewis, Clark Lewis, Brandon Struyk and Avery Struyk; former daughter-in-law, Virginia Piner of Beaufort; also many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. Dick and Bertha Willis Lewis, sisters, Lillian Davis, Bertha Grey Willis, Helen Lewis, Margarette Hancock, Louise Hancock, Rosa Lea Davis, Ruth Varrone and a half-brother, Bill Quidley.
" God be with you till we meet again."

The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Wednesday at the church.
