The Reverend Ellis Jennings Bedsworth, 88, of Greenville died Wednesday, July 24, 2013.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church Rev. Karen Howell, Rev. Paul Harris, and Rev. Ron Estes officiating. Interment will follow at Victoria Cemetery.
A member of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church he served 12 churches which spanned fifty three years. They were Epworth, Chapman and Lanes Chapel; Beech Grove, Clarks and Rhems; LaGrange, Trinity in New Bern; Bethel where he served thirteen years; and Plymouth before taking a retired appointment in 1981 to Trinity in Marshallberg, his home church and Smyrna, where he served seventeen years before retiring in 2008.
He was born in Baltimore, MD June 25, 1925 to the late Ellis Basil Bedsworth of the eastern shore of Maryland and Mary Ward Davis Bedsworth of Marshallberg. His family moved to Marshallberg and Ellis graduated from Smyrna High School. He attended Louisburg College,a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College, and worked for the Imperial Tobacco Co. for seven years. His 21 months in the Army provided the GI bill to attend Duke Divinity School. He loved the Lord and was loved by fellow pastors and parishioner.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Betty Ann Shaw Bedsworth of the home; daughter Brenda B. Estes and husband Ron of Harlowe; son Ellis J. Bedsworth, Jr., (Jay) and wife Laura of Greenville; five grandchildren Robert, James, Denise, Crystal, and Morgan; six great grandchildren Eric, Joshua, Makenzie, Melanie, Charles, and Hope.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Friday at Munden Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Bethel United Methodist Church.
