Retired US Navy CDR Lewis Edward Newbry

January 7, 1922 — April 16, 2011

Loving father, devoted husband, caring brother and a friend to all, Cmdr. Lewis Edward Newbry (Ret) passed away on the evening of April 16th.  He was 89.  As a storm raged along the Carolina coast, Lew quietly slipped away. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.  The family takes solace in their faith that Lew is at peace and in the knowledge of a life well-lived.

Born in Talent, Oregon in January 1922 to Lester and Cloteen, Lew was among the rare in life that fulfill not just one dream, but many.  As a boy he longed to take to the skies and he realized that dream through service to his country as a Navy pilot.  Cmdr. Newbry mastered the art of take-off and landing on aircraft carriers.  Not an easy feat, but one which epitomized his character - bold, daring, brave - qualities that benefitted those with whom he served in both World War II and the Korean War.
After retiring from the Navy in 1967, Lew pursued another dream of his when he took ownership of a Texaco service station.  He had a fascination for understanding how things worked and had ample opportunity to learn about everything automotive in the bays of his gas station. Upon settling in Jacksonville, Florida in 1978, Lew proudly donned a new uniform, that of Marshall for the PGA Players Championship for over 15 years.  And thus another dream fulfilled, as he stood beside the greats on the green. Lew was first married to Esther Mae Palmer, a Navy WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), in 1944. They had three girls, Kathy, Nanette and Colleen. He was widowed in 1976 and later married Hilda Mae Murphy to whom he was married for 37 years. The Navy was a constant in Lew’s life even in retirement. He found friendship and fellowship as a member of the Military Officers Association of America, and the Power Squadron where he served the Jacksonville chapters as President and as Commander respectively.

Lew had a zest for life, an unbridled curiosity, a love for family and an abiding faith in God.  His spirit lives on in our hearts and minds.

Lew is survived by his wife, Hilda Newbry; daughter Kathy Newbry and husband David Liane; daughter Nanette and husband Richard Dowdy; daughter Colleen and husband Steven Elkins; stepdaughter Maureen McManus; stepson Kelly and wife Mary McManus; grandsons Tucker and Brody Elkins, Rich and Chris Dowdy, JJ Smith, granddaughter Shannon Dowdy and five great-granchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America.  Donations may be made online at www.myasenthia.org, or via mail to MGFA, 355 Lexington Avenue, 15th Flr., New York, NY 10017.
