Renee (Bjorklund) Fetzer

August 28, 1927 — August 24, 2014

Renee Bjorklund Fetzer, 86 of Newport, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014 after an extended illness.

Her memorial service will be held at 6pm, Sunday, August 31, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC.  Family will receive visitors from 5-6pm.

She was born August 28, 1927 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  She graduated from the University of Minnesota and Macalester College with a bachelors in education, and later earned her master’s degree in English, graduating summa cum laude from Rutgers University in New Brunswick. She met the love of her life at Macalester College, Bruce LeRoy Fetzer, and married on December 30, 1947.  She was a devoted mother to her four boys, and taught grade school.  The family relocated to Morehead City, purchasing Spooners Creek Yacht Harbor in 1978, then the Galley Stack Restaurant in 1980.  The family run business was operated for 26 years until 2004. Renee operated the Galley Stack Restaurant, and was known as an excellent chef and hostess for large parties and dinner cruises.

Renee dearly loved her four children, John, Brian, Bruce, and Paul, their spouses and their children. She generously served the public, and both led and assisted in beautification projects as a Master Gardener.  Her prolific and beautiful gardens in and around her house demonstrated her artistic taste and exceptional gardening skill.  Her dignity, knowledge and selfless service, impacted countless individuals.

Renee is survived by children and their spouses, Susan Fetzer, Brian and Terry Fetzer, Bruce and Darby Fetzer, Paul and Amy Fetzer, eleven grandchildren, Stephen, Jeanne, Heather, Adam, Della, Rose, Grace, Ryanne, Jamie, Haley, and great grandchild Brody.

Renee was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bruce LeRoy Fetzer and son, John LeRoy Fetzer, and parents Ernst and Linnea Bjorklund.

The family would like to thank her caregivers Jane, Michele, Jennifer, Marion, Donna, Terry, Brian, Dr. William T. Walker and dear friend Marie Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Renee’s name may be made to The Carteret County Horticulture Fund with a notation for The Master Gardener Programs, Cooperative Extension 303 College Circle, Morehead City, NC 28557, to honor Ms. Fetzer.
