Raymond "Ray" N. Muns

January 14, 1938 — December 26, 2017

Raymond “Ray” N. Muns, 79, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at his home.  He went to sleep and woke up in Jesus’ arms.

His memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by the Reverend Dr. Jack Hamilton, brother-in-law and Reverend Steve Crowley, nephew.

Ray was born on January 14, 1938 in Barnwell County, SC.  He met the love of his life, Barbara Jackson in 1956, when she was just 14 years old, and he was 17.  The next year, Ray told her that he was too old for her, but he asked her to wait for him, as he was joining the US Navy and would be gone for two years.  She agreed, and happily became his wife on August 1, 1959.  They joyfully celebrated 58 years of marriage as each other’s best friend.

As previously mentioned, Ray served in the US Navy from 1957-1959.  He also served in the US Air Force from 1962-1967.  After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Ray went on to have a successful career as a computer specialist/sales and marketing for Sperry-Unisys Corporation, until he retired in 1993 after 25 years with the company.  After his retirement, Ray worked for Mystery Tours, the business owned by his son, Marty Muns.  Ray loved his country and he loved politics; he was elected to be a Carteret County commissioner and served in this position from 2002-2006.  He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge of Flint Hill, Georgia, where he was recently awarded his 50 year lambskin apron.  He was also a member the VFW, the American Legion, the Shriners of Sudan Temple, New Bern, and the Scottish Rite.

Ray loved his family deeply.  His happiest times were spent fishing with his sons and giving his grandchildren “shaky bear hugs.”  He worked hard all his life to provide a good life for his wife and children.  When his sons got married, he loved his daughters-in-law like his own birth children.  He will be sorely missed by his family and the multitudes of others who were positively affected by his life.  Ray is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bobbie” Muns of the home; sons, Marty Muns and wife, Lori Muns of Morehead City, Mickey Muns of Morehead City, Mitchell Muns and wife, Pam Muns of Ohatchee, AL, daughter-in-law, Pam Broome and husband, Steve; sister, Vivian Hamilton and  husband, Rev. Dr. Jack Hamilton of Madison Heights, VA; brother, Andy Muns of Aiken, SC; grandchildren, Matthew Muns, Kaitlyn Muns, Perry Muns, Patience Smith, Amanda Muns, and Adam Muns, and great-grandchildren, Tanner Muns, Katy Joy Muns, Nathan Muns, Callie Smith and Anderson Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Eula Muns, and brother, Martin Laverne Muns.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
