Raymond Szypulski

November 1, 1921 — February 21, 2010

Raymond Syzpulski, 88, of Pine Knoll Shores, departed this life at home in the loving care of his wife and children on Sunday morning, 2010.02.21 at 5.55 AM.
Born on 1921.11.01, the second of three sons in New Kensington, PA, he served his country honorably in the Navy Air Command in World War II, servicing and maintaining fighter and transport aircraft bound for overseas duty stations.
Upon his discharge, he pursued and attained his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Catholic University of America and his master's degree from the University of Maryland, while employed as a Capitol police officer in Washington, DC.
He continued a life and career in public service as a design engineer with the Department of the Navy, serving much of his tenure as official representative to NATO. Alone, and in concert with other design engineers, he developed a number of ordinance, signaling, and safety devices for which the government received patents-including the technology for the glowsticks utilized in so many products today.
Before and upon his retirement, he received the highest civilian service awards from the Department of the Navy in recognition of his substantial contributions and accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Faye Szypulski; his brother Francis Szypulski and wife Harriet; his son Steven Szypulski and wife Pamela; his daughter Kathryn Walker and husband Burl; his daughter Laura Newlin and husband Bob; his son Thomas Szypulski and wife Karen; his nine grandchildren; Louise, Hannah, Manja, Brooke, Erin, Vanessa, Dustin, Kathryn, and Evan; and his nine great grandchildren, Lily, Grace, Molly, Bethannie, Olivia, Donovan, Morgan, Brayden and Gracie.
He was preceded in death by his brother Ed Szypulski and wife Alice, and by his eldest son Sgt. Raymond Curtis Szypulski, USMC.
A funeral mass will be said in his memory at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City on 2010.02.27 at 1:30 pm. The family will receive friends following the service. He will rest in peace in Arlington National Cemetery.
