Ralph Bryan Stevens, 96, a Native of Johnston County died on Friday, June 6, 2014 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on April 17, 1918, the son of Lavarah Roberts Stevens and Clarence H. Stevens.
He is survived by his sister, Hazel Hood of Southport, North Carolina and preceded in death by his sister Grace and brother Bill.
At the onset of World War II he joined the U. S. Navy and was assigned as a shore patrolman. During this time he met his wife of sixty two years, Dorothy Stant Stevens, who was a nurse in Philadephia. After the war the couple moved back to Mount Olive, NC where he was general manager of Thompson and Stevens Wholesale Grocery. He was a member and Post Commander of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Lions Club. In 1953, “R.B.” went to work for Farmers Cooperative Exchange (FCX) and settled in Raleigh. He stayed with the company until his retirement in 1983 as a division manager. In 1984 R.B. and Dot retired to Morehead City, where he was an avid fisherman. Both Dot and R.B. were active, longtime members of First Baptist Church in Morehead City.
He is survived by his three sons, James Corbin Stevens and wife Ann of Newport, NC; Alan Roberts Stevens and wife Melinda of Raleigh, NC; and David Bryan Stevens and wife Rose of Rawlins, WY. "Papa R.B."was proudest of his five grandchildren Jim, Jr, Phillip, Melissa, Alan, and Margaret and his four great grandchildren Madeline, Foster, Zachary, and Meredith.
The family wishes to extend its deepest appreciation and special thanks to R.B.’s caregivers Rhonda Lamb, Rhonda Moore, Tanjalena McDonald, and Mary McManus for their untiring support and kindness. The family also wishes to thank Hospice House of Carteret County for their support.
The family will receive friends at Munden Funeral Home, 2112 Arendell St. Morehead City on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church, 810 Bridges St. Morehead City, NC on June 9, 2014 at 11:00 am with Rev. Nate Leonard officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park, Hwy 24, Newport, NC.
