Radford Carlysle Bowen

August 24, 1926 — January 28, 2011

Radford Carlysle Bowen, 84, of Newport, went to be with his Lord Friday, January 28, 2011.

Services will be held 11:00 am Monday at Newport Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Carroll and Rev. Jack Bowen officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The only child of Commie and Clara Bowen, he was born August 24th, 1926 in Greene County. He joined the US Navy and served from 1944 to 1946. While serving, he landed in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia and found the love of his life. He married Kathleen “Kitty” Varnadore on August 15th, 1945. He brought her back to North Carolina, where they eventually bought a small farm on what is now the Newport Loop Road. Here they raised five children together. He worked over 20 years as a civil service employee until retirement in the mid 70's. He was a long time member of Newport Baptist Church, where he served many times as a deacon. He found the greatest blessing of life to be the love of his family and the many who he welcomed as family throughout the years. However, to anyone who had the chance to know him, he was the blessing to us all.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 65 years, Kitty Bowen; sons, David Bowen, Sr., Carl Bowen, Greg Bowen and wife, Debbie, and Jeff Bowen; daughter, Jane Cayton, all of Newport; ten grandchildren, David Bowen, Jr., Lee Bowen, Sabrina Bowen, Melissa Cayton, Greta Davis, Sammy Weeks, Debbie Morris, Donna Greene, Earl Weeks, Michelle Smith and husband Don; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Reynolds and husband, DJ, Devin Smith, Aprille Weeks, Regan Tell, Jayden Smith, Austin Davis, Brooke Davis, and Timothy Barrett Bowen; three great-great- grandchildren, Tanner Reynolds, Chloe Weeks, and Landon Reynolds.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Timmy Bowen, and daughter-in-law, Edna Player Bowen.

The family will receive friends 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday at the church.
