Preston Jule Garrish, 94, of Beaufort, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Ocracoke United Methodist Church with Reverend Richard Bryant officiating. Interment will follow the service at Howard Cemetery.
Jule served in the US Navy during World War II, and then retired from the US Coast Guard. He also retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a member of Ann Street United Methodist Church in Beaufort. Jule always had a passion and love for music. He was a singer with the Ocracoke Opry, that had an involvement with Nicholas Sparks’ “Nights In Rodanthe” film. He was also one of the original members of the Graveyard Band of Ocracoke. He had a lifetime love of the water. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary B. Garrish of the home; sons, Wilson Jule Garrish and wife Martha of Ocracoke and Frankie Garrish and wife Laurie of Ocracoke; step-daughter, Kathy Reed and husband Jim of Washington, NC; step-sons, Chris Bowen and wife Margo of Chapel Hill and Bob Bowen of Taylorsville, NC; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Preston Gibbs Garrish; mother, Bertha O’Neal Garrish; first wife, Etta Mae Garrish; sisters, Carrie Salter, Olive Garrish, Aldenia G. Whitehurst, and Bertha O’Neal; brothers, Powers Garrish, and Alfred Garrish; and step-son, Thomas H. Bowen.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
