Phillip "Phil" Alton Mason

Phillip Alton “Phil” Mason, 73, of Portsmouth, VA, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2016 at home.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Atlantic United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Harris officiating.  Interment will follow at Over the Brook Cemetery in Atlantic.

Phil served his country in the Navy for 20 years and retired as a Navy Chief, as well as ten years in the Navy Reserve.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved the outdoors.  A firm believer in a quality education, he attained his Doctorate and attended both the University of Southern California and the University of New York State.  Phil was a great and loving husband and father who will truly be missed.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rowena “Row” Mason of the home; daughter, Cindy Rector of Atlantic; sons, Phillip A. Mason Jr. of Suffolk, VA and David T. Mason of Brookneal, VA; grandchildren, Crystal Rector, Sarah Rector, Caitlyn Rector, Darcy Mason and Caleb Mason; and great grandchild David Paul Hill III; as well as many relatives living in Atlantic.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Sylvia (Smith) Mason.

The family will welcome friends one hour prior to the service at the church in Atlantic.
