“Daddy Perry”

Perry Jones Goodwin Jr, of Atlantic peacefully went to his heavenly home on June 17, 2017. He was affectionately known by those who loved him as “Daddy Perry” and “Captain Perry.”

Perry was born on December 18, 1939 on Cedar Island, NC to Perry Sr. and Addie Goodwin.  He was eldest of seven children: Phyllis, Curtis “Peter”, Ann, Dale, Charles “Stinker” and John.

Perry left home as a teenager to follow what would be a lifelong passion of working on the water which eventually took him across the country and even as far away as Venezuela. Perry always said most of his livelihood came from clamming which he continued to enjoy throughout his life. He later worked for many years as a dredge engineer before retiring from Norfolk Dredging Company in 2007.

Perry met wife Kathy in 2006 and they were married on September 9, 2009.  They continued Perry’s love of the water with trips out in the boat to go fishing and clamming.  They shared his love of travel through vacations in destinations such as Florida, Tennessee and Mexico. During their time at home, they bicycled, kayaked and gardened before settling into a more relaxed pace in recent years.

Perry was a devoted man of faith, an asset to the community and a valued friend and mentor to many. He had a lifetime of stories to tell usually shared over a delicious meal as Perry was a seasoned cook.

Perry’s children, Amy and Chris, as well as his extended family through wife Kathy, created a loving, blended family with many children and grandchildren with brought him much happiness, pride and joy.

Perry’s strong faith leaves no doubt that he was welcomed home by his parents Perry Sr. and Addie Styron, brother Curtis “Peter” Goodwin and sister Ann Daniels.

Perry is remembered with love by his dedicated wife Kathleen Goodwin of the home, her children Toni and husband Samuel Styron of Cedar Island, Sean Gaskill of Mississippi, grandchildren Rebecca Simons of Beaufort and Christopher Gaskill of Smyrna, grandsons Noah Dugan of Beaufort and Sebastian Styron of Cedar Island.

“Daddy Perry” is remembered with love by his daughter Amy and husband Mike Willis of Atlantic, son Chris Goodwin of Cedar Island, granddaughters Taryn Shepherd of Cedar Island and Patience Willis of Atlantic, grandson Jackson Goodwin of Cedar Island and great grandson Daily Shepherd of Cedar Island.

Perry is remembered with love by his sister Phyllis Gillikin of Otway, Dale and husband Boris Lawrence of Otway, Charles “Stinker” and wife Carolene Goodwin of Newport, and brother John Goodwin of Kinston as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Perry’s Most Loved Bible Verse

No power in the sky above or in the earth below indeed nothing in all creation will ever be able to

separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.        Romans 8:39
