Palma E. (Krieger) Swirsky, 92, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011 at Carteret General Hospital.
Palma was born March 29, 1919 in Iliff, Colorado, until moving to Newport to be near her family, she lived and worked in the Northeast, primarily Fort Lee, NJ.
Mrs. Swirsky was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Swirsky in 2007.
Mrs. Swirsky is survived by two daughters, Carol De Gennaro and Connie Day and her husband Gilbert Day, all of Newport.
She leaves four grandchildren, Richard Keil, and Cindy Keil both of Raleigh, Susan Kilker and husband Gary Kilker of Newport, and J. Curtis Boyd of Fort Pierce, FL; one great-grandson, Garrett Mills and his wife Hilary of California. She is also survived by one brother, Kermit Krieger of California, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Swirsky’s early professional life took her to an executive position with Stern Brothers Department Stores in New York City in the 1960’s. Her husband Samuel Swirsky was retired executive of Bali, a division of Hanes, Company. The devoted couple enjoyed many years together at their home in Fort Lee, NJ, and now they will be together forever.
Art was Palma’s life-long passion. Her work in oils, pastels, water colors and acrylics were exhibited and juried in galleries on Cape Cod, in New Jersey and New York City including The National Arts Club, Catherine Wolfe Art Club, The Salmagundi Club and the Hartford Connecticut Athenaeum. She was an active member of The Fort Lee, NJ Artists Guild. Her versatile talent included waterscapes, landscapes, still life and portraits of people and animals.
“Palma”, as she signed her work, brought her art to Carteret County, showing through the “Adopt an Artist” Program as well as private gallery presentations including her show at Cassie Howe Algeo Gallery at Carteret General Hospital in August 2008.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Alonzo Davis for his loving attention and care. We also thank the staff at Carolina House and Carteret General Hospital for their kind and professional care in Palma’s last days.
The family plans a private celebration of life.
