Olealla Inez Merrill Gillikin Powell, 92, of Beaufort, NC.

The community of Bettie has lost its oldest mother, Inez Powell, she passed away suddenly on Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 2017 at Carteret Health Care.

Her service will take place at the Woodville Baptist Church, 11 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2017 with the Rev. Terry D. McInnis officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. The burial will follow at the Woodville Garden Cemetery in Bettie.

Inez was born on October 29, 1924 in the community of Russell Creek where she grew up. After her marriage, she moved to the Bettie community where she lived the remainder of her life. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling life filled with her love of family, gardening and travel. Her zest for life was reflected in everyone she met and everything she touched.

Inez is survived by her sons: Jerry Kenneth Gillikin and wife, Judy Golden Gillikin of Bettie, William Ronald Gillikin and Rita Eubanks of Adams Creek, Terry Keith Gillikin and Chris Smith of Washington. Her loving grandchildren are: Tanya Dawn Gillikin and husband Frankie Lane Harrison of Apex, Paige Gillikin Schreier and husband Matthew Michael Schreier of Charlotte, William Ronald Gillikin, Jr. of Wilmington, Erin Inez Gillikin of Raleigh and George Michael Shelton Gillikin of Morehead City and two great grandchildren: Piper Lenora Gillikin and Morgan Marie Schreier.

She was preceded in death by the father of her children, William Felton Gillikin and her second husband, Ezra Robert Powell; her parents: Kernie Andrew Merrill, Sr. and Nellie Mae Dickerson Merrill; her sister, Vida Mae Merrill Gillikin, brothers; Donza Lee Merrill, Kenneth Earl Merrill, Ulish Edward Merrill, Billy Swindell Merrill, Kerney Andrew Merrill, Jr., Clifford Maxwell Merrill, and Colon Gray Merrill.
