Norman Travis Skinner, 90, of Cape Carteret, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
A memorial service to honor Norman's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 17th at Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Ben Burrows. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Norman was born September 9, 1933, to Fredrick and Stella Skinner. He was their second child.
Norman served in the US Navy aboard a destroyer in Japanese and Korean waters during the Korean War. After being discharged at the end of hostilities he attended college in southern California where he met and married for a short time. They had two children.
After his time in California, he returned to Ayden, North Carolina where he made a career working as a maintenance mechanic in the powerhouse at the DuPont plant in Kinston. He married his beautiful wife Gail in 1986 and gained three more grown children and their families.
After he retired, they built their lovely home down along the Bogue Sound. He was a faithful member of the Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and on their board of Education. He enjoyed Hunting (especially fouls), fishing, crossword puzzles, and traveling with Gail to Parts of Europe and throughout the United States.
He is survived by his wife Gail, sister Frances Lewark, brother Charles Skinner, sister-in-law Frankie Jones, and children Fred (Debra) Miller, Susan (Paul) Stone, Terry (Craig) Lanier, Michele (Tom) Brand, Brady Quinn, 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Marion (Bruce) Barton and Freddie (Kit) Weaver, and brother-in-law Maylon Lewark.
