Nick Smith Jr.

Nick Smith Jr., 61, of Otway, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023, at his home.

Born on September 20, 1962, in Morehead City, North Carolina, Nick was the son of the late Nick Smith Sr. and Hopie Rose Smith.

Known for his love of craftsmanship, Nick carried on the family tradition as a third-generation boat builder. His passion for building boats was evident in every vessel he crafted, leaving behind a legacy of skill and artistry. Nick's determination and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Nick's Specialty Woods, a local natural wood business. Nick also worked as a commercial fisherman where he loved being on the open waters and appreciating the beauty of the Crystal Coast.

Nick was an avid lover of nature and animals, and his furry companions held a special place in his heart. His dogs were not only loyal companions but also sources of comfort and companionship throughout his life's journey.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his companion, Connie Rosser of the home; daughter, Alicia Wade and husband Thomas of Beaufort and Joseph Smith of Beaufort; sister, Mary Rose and husband Rodney of Harkers Island; grandchildren, Carley Wade, Thomas Wade Jr., Taylor Smith, Ethan Smith, and Caleb Smith; and his dog, Bella.

In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his brothers, Phillip Ray Smith and Johnny James Smith.

In honor of Nick’s love for animals, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a Humane Society or Animal Shelter of your choice.
