Nelda Marie Arthur Johnson

Nelda Marie Arthur Johnson, 80, of Morehead City, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at her home.

Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel, in Morehead City, with Lt. Vande Slunt USN,officiating. Interment to follow at Bayview Cemetery.

Nelda was born to Vernon Arthur of Morehead City and Lula Lewis Arthur of Stacy, at the Morehead City Hospital in the Promise Land.  She graduated with the Morehead City High School Class of ’55.  Nelda was selected to be a member of the Glee Club during her high school years.  She was married to Richard Milton Johnson for 27 years.  In early marriage, she and Richard ran the skating rink at the Atlantic Beach Circle.

Nelda was a first class, stay-at-home mother to Ricky, Lori, and John.  She is remembered for cooking the best fried chicken ever.  She was a loving mother who was sweet, gentle, caring, and who always put others first.  She treasured being outside in the sun while boating and enjoying other water activities.  She loved mowing grass, raking her yard, and keeping a fresh coat of paint on her home more than any human being in history!  You could usually find her Aunt Edith Davis or Sister-in-Law Carolyn Arthur hanging out with her in the neighborhood.  Happiness to Nelda was being busy, working hard, and being with the ones she loved.

Later in life, she filled her weekends with her longtime friends and neighbors Ann Ballard and Mary Korkuc looking for the next yard sale.  If not there, she was cutting up with her childhood friend Sandra Bell.  And you can’t forget her friends Marjorie and Jeannine.  She enjoyed visits with Craig and Kaiden.

Her granddaughter Lauren was her sweetheart and her two great-granddaughters, Ava and Natalie, were her pride and joy.

And in the words of George - Nelda was Great!  She was loved deeply from all around for her kindness and stunning beauty.  She never complained, even in pain.  That was Nelda, simple and plain.

She is survived by her daughter, Lori Ann Johnson Crawford of Morehead City; son, John Christopher Johnson of Morehead City; brother, Craig Allen Arthur of Newport; sister-in-law, Carolyn Weeks Arthur; granddaughter, Dr. Lauren Ann Phillips Martin and husband Adam of Greenville; two great-grandchildren, Ava Marie Martin and Natalie Katherine Martin; also, the family dog, Rebel and two pet birds.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Charles Johnson; parents, Vernon Charles and Lula Lewis Arthur; and her brother, Charles Vernon Arthur.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel, in Morehead City.
