Nathaniel “Nate” Hawthorne Johnson Jr., 73, of Havelock, North Carolina, passed away on January 6, 2018 at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock, North Carolina with Pastor G. Otis Green, from Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, officiating.

Nate served his country for four and half years in the Air Force.  In the latter part of his career, he was a Planner Estimator, inspecting and evaluating military aircraft for airworthiness, both stateside and in combat areas abroad. He loved his career as a Planner Estimator and received numerous awards for his commitment to service and excellence.  After retiring, Nate became more active in the Havelock community.  He was an instructor for Craven Community College and a member of the Havelock Planning Board.  He was also an active member of several organizations, such as the Havelock-Cherry Point Rotary Club, National Active and Retired Federal Employee Association, and the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Plains.

Nate joined the Havelock-Cherry Point Rotary Club in 2008.  Since joining the Rotary Club, Nate has held numerous positions.  At the time of his death, he was acting Treasurer and CART Chair.  He was a highly engaged and committed Rotarian.  In 2011, Nate was named Rotarian of the year.  In addition, Nate was also passionate about mentoring and served as the Interact mentor for Havelock High School and Annunciation Catholic School (specifically, middle school).

Nate began his volunteer service with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Plains in August of 2012, as an Advisory Board Member for the Havelock Club. In 2013, Nate volunteered to serve as Advisory Board President for the Havelock Club and was recognized as the Advisory Board Member of the Year for 2013. In January of 2015, he was asked to serve on the Corporate Board of Directors and serve on the Operations Committee. He was a highly engaged and committed Board Member; attending all corporate and local club events, as well raising awareness and money for the Boys & Girls Club. Nate could be found spending time with the members and staff of the Havelock Club on a regular basis. He loved the Boys & Girls Club and the club loved him dearly.

Nate is survived by son, Aarron Nathaniel Johnson; daughter, Cicely Eugenia Kracoe and husband Geoffrey; grandchildren, Kelley Nikia Johnson, Iris Ashley Chadwick, Destiney Takiema Ayaunna Johnson, D’Asia Kha-Jai Ar-Moni Johnson; Elias James Micharski, Natalie Jaquera Johnson and great-grandchildren, Kaleb Emmanuel Johnson Henderson, Joshua Brent Parrish Jr., and Kayleigh Janaye Chadwick.

Nate is also survived by his mother, Lula Mae Johnson, sisters, Ruby McClain, Arlene Bailey and husband Robert, June Johnson-Pitts and husband Jesse, Mable Johnson-Brooks and husband Michael, and brothers, Wm. Arthur Johnson, , Dwight A. Johnson and wife Marquitta, Michael Johnson, Derrick Johnson and wife Jacki.

He is preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Carolyn Ann Beasley Johnson, and father, Nathaniel Sr.

He will be missed by a vast extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will welcome friends from 6 pm to 8 pm, Friday, January 19, 2018 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations in honor of Mr. Johnson be made to the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Plains, 621 W. Fire Tower Road, Winterville, NC 28590.
