A loving father, friend and devoted servant to others is what most of us called him……On Monday, April 9th, 2012 Nathan James (Jim) Hobson 68, of Newport passed away at Vidant Medical Center, as the result of an automobile accident.
Dad was born December 21st, 1943, in the Highpoint, Sanford area and spent his childhood there. As a young man he entered the United States Army and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Dad moved to the Carteret County area in 1966 when his Mother and Father managed the old Jefferson Hotel. It was at this time that he met our Mother Evelyn Graham and they were married shortly thereafter, Raising her three children as though they were his own. In a few short years they had three more children of their own, for a total of six children.
From the 1960’s through the late 1970’s Dad worked construction, and was also a painter at Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point. He also worked for a short time as a Security Guard at Brandy Wine Bay. In the early 1980’s Dad stumbled upon a line of work that he continued until his death. Bail Bonding was something that he enjoyed and found rewarding. He loved to talk to and help people, and being a Bail Bondsman gave him many opportunities to do just that. Although Dad always said he hated making a living at someone else’s misfortune, it was nothing for him to bond someone out of jail, and take them to the local grocery store to buy them groceries before taking them home.
That’s how Dad was….He cared about people, and that’s a lesson we all could learn from. Dad’s favorite saying was “Don’t worry, be happy”.
He is survived by sons Ray Bass of Yamasee, SC, James Bass of Newport, and Timothy Hobson of Jacksonville, NC, daughters Linda Ronka of Chandler, AZ, Sandra Schrader of Newport, and Dorothy Andrus of Newport: sister Mary Lou Hobson Denny of Winston-Salem, and brother Bill Copley of Pinehurst, NC: eight grand: and seven great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Saturday at Broad Creek Community Cemetery with the Rev. Wesley Holmes officiating. Visitation will follow the service at 199 Nine Mile Rd. Newport.
