Narvia “Mae” Ebron Gillikin, 99, of Bettie, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
A funeral service to honor Mae’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 31st at Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church, 195 Old River Road, Bettie, NC., with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior. A graveside service will follow at the Carteret Memorial Gardens in Beaufort. For those unable to attend, the funeral service can be viewed through her obituary page on Munden Funeral Home’s website. The service will remain on the Funeral Home website for 90 days.
Mae was born in Fayetteville, NC to the late Michael Ebron and Octavia Hubbard Ebron. She graduated from Charles S. Wallace High School in Morehead City and attended the Highsmith School of Nursing in Fayetteville. Using that training, she worked with Dr. Theodore Salter and Dr. Milton Morey where she was known as "Miss Mae" and retired in 1985. She was a faithful member of the Welcome Home Baptist Church, serving as Treasurer for many years, and also past Matron of the Beaufort Chapter #128 Order of the Eastern Star.
Mae was known for her witty personality and the ability to tell jokes. Chocolate and lemon meringue pies, angel food cakes, cinnamon buns, and fried pecans were her specialties, which she shared generously with others. She lived her entire adult life in Bettie. Her home place, over the years, was known by the children in the neighborhood as a place to play, get free food, and support when needed.
She loved her children, Carvie L. Gillikin (Ginger), Stanley Bruce Gillikin (Rose), and Sandra Meahl; her grandchildren, Carvie Allen Gillikin (Karl Klingener), Jason Gillikin (Debbie), Elizabeth Whitworth (Scott), Carolyn Roach (Mike), Ryan Meahl (Whitney) and Jeremy Meahl (Annie); and her great-grandchildren, Hannah Kate, Alexa, Abby, Charlie, Howie, Davey and Luke, who all brought her great joy. Surviving are sisters-in-law, Ellie, Rosalie, and Gloria Gillikin.
Her husbands, Stanley W. Gillikin and Carvie D. Gillikin, both military veterans, preceded her in death. Along with her sister, Octavia Marie Garner and many sisters and brothers-in-law.
Her nieces and nephews (great and great-great), Down East community network, church family and the Crystal Bluffs staff looked after her as she aged contributing to a long and enriched life. For those kind blessings, the immediate family is very grateful.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church, 195 Old River Road, Beaufort, NC 28516.
Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences.
