Myrtle Williams Merrill, 97, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Carteret Health Care.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2019, at St. James United Methodist Church in Newport, officiated by Rev. Tom Supplee. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Myrtle was born and raised in Newport. She was a faithful member of St. James United Methodist Church where she was involved in numerous church ministries. She especially enjoyed teaching various Sunday School classes. Her giving and caring ways allowed her to bless so many lives as she volunteered at the Thrift Shop and Food Pantry. Her ministry extended to the Women’s Circle groups, Lay Witness Missions and Youth Fellowship. In the community, she was a den mother with the cub scouts. She advanced to Associate Matron of the Eastern Star where she was involved for a number of years. Myrtle will be remembered as a loving and dedicated daughter, wife and mother. She was also committed to taking care of her parents in their later years.
She is survived by two sons, Gerald Regan “Rick” Merrill and wife Sharon of Raleigh, and Randy Merrill and wife Luanne of Harkers Island; one daughter, Twyla Luedeke and husband, Jonathan of Columbus, OH; six grandchildren, David Luedeke and wife Theresa, Mica Luedeke Lockwood and husband Mike, Miranda Merrill Zumbro and husband Neal, Grayson Merrill and wife Emily, Trevor Merrill, Shelton Merrill and wife Katherine. There are 11 great grandchildren, Caden, Elias, Landon, and Flynn Lockwood, Saylor, Skylynn, Talan and Graham Merrill, David and Jacob Luedeke, and Mateo Zumbro.
Myrtle is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Gerald Merrill, and her parents, Henry and Emma Williams.
Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. till 2 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2019, at St. James United Methodist Church in Newport.
