Mitchell Ray Morris, 76, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013 at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, NC. He was born on July 26, 1936 in Morehead City, NC to Wallace and Mary Bell Morris.
Mitchell grew up on Ocracoke Island and Atlantic, NC. He married Vilma Lewis in 1955. They were happily married for 57 years. After working on the water for many years, Mitchell was then employed by the NC State Port in Morehead City, NC, where he retired after 26 years.
Mitchell was a 50 year member of Franklin Masonic Lodge, Beaufort, NC and was a charter member of the Crissie Wright Lodge in Smyrna, NC. He enjoyed spending time on the water fishing and boating. Mitchell was very proud of his heritage and was an avid storyteller, always sharing his adventures on Ocracoke, Portsmouth and Core Sound. He liked nothing more than Vilma's light rolls (not nylon biscuits!) and spending days with family and friends. His home was always open for anyone to stop by and share a meal or a story. Many stopped in to share tales about Carteret County and times past. Mitchell loved his family dearly and his grandchildren were the apples of his eye. He was blessed with a wonderful life and will certainly be missed.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Mary Bell Morris; his Step- Mother and Step-Father Anita and Robert Golden; brother Anthony “Puck” Morris; his daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Alonza Guthrie.
Mitchell is survived by his spouse Vilma Morris, son Randy Morris, daughter Sonjia Garner and husband Robin; brothers Ray Tallent, Wally Morris, Paul Morris; Step-brother and sister George Golden and Judy Gillikin; Grandchildren Henry Guthrie and wife Kimberly, Desmond Garner and wife Kari, Dexter Garner and wife Brandie, Misty Parrish and husband Justin, Shanna Rose and husband Dallas, Timothy Trout; great-grandchildren Elli, Alise, Harrison, Alexandria, Aubrey, and Isaac.
