Milton “Toby” McDaniel, 92, of Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
A celebration of Toby’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 12th at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic Beach.
Toby was born on March 2, 1932, in New Bern, NC to the late Milton and Sadie McDaniel. After completing high school, he honorably served in the United States Army, which reflected his dedication and commitment to his country. He then embarked on a rewarding career as a draftsman, where his meticulous attention to detail and communication skills contributed greatly to his success.
A devoted member of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, Toby cherished his faith and was actively involved in church activities, frequently serving as a greeter and welcoming all with a friendly smile. His commitment extended beyond the church community, as he was also a proud member of the Ocean Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, reflecting his dedication to their charitable causes.
Toby's passion for sports was evident throughout his life. For 35 years, he served as a referee for high school and college basketball games, showcasing his love for the sport and reflecting his solid judgement. Always one to stay busy, Toby dedicated his time volunteering at West Carteret High School where he often drove the bus for band and coached various sports, including LaCross, soccer, and baseball.
His warm personality and ability to make friends easily meant that Toby never met a stranger. He will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband of 72 years, a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Toby leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and love that will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife, Ruth Hobbs McDaniel; daughter, Donna Boyette McDaniel of Morehead City, NC; son, Lee McDaniel of Deerfield Beach, FL; sister, Patricia Ward of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Michael McDaniel (Chantel) and William Edward Boyette; great-grandchildren, Noah Michael McDaniel and Melissa McDaniel.; and godson, Steven Sullivan of Morehead City, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, 201 E. Fort Macon Rd., Atlantic Beach, NC 28512.
