Mildred Elizabeth Clark Spence, 87, of Newport, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.

A graveside service will be held 3:30 pm Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Cannady Cemetery with Preacher David Price officiating.

Mildred grew up and lived most of her life in the Newport Community. Her first husband’s military career took the family all over the country and the world. She lived in Coco Beach, Florida while he fished commercially. She returned to Newport before his passing and that is where she met and married her second husband and spent the entirety of her later years.

She made her family her priority but still managed to be an accomplished and prolific reader. Her final two years were spent in Middlesex and Zebulon, while living with her daughter, Nancy,  she continued to make friends.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Kay Phelps, Helen Marie Davis, and Charlotte Ann Lewis; two sons, Albry Ray Spence and Ronnie Lewis Spence; two brothers, Everette Glenn Clark and James L. Clark; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, five great-greatgrandchildren; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Noah James Spence, Jr.; second husband, Edward Isaac Pennuell; parents, Garfield and Charlotte Bell Clark; and four brothers, John Henry Clark, Elmer Lewis Clark, Walter Howard Clark, and Eddie Thomas Clark.

The family will receive friends 2:00 – 3:00 pm Wednesday prior to the graveside service at Munden Funeral Home.
