Mildred (Taylor) Simmons

Mildred Taylor Simmons, Sea Level, NC, formerly of Henderson, NC
Mildred Taylor Simmons died on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay in Sea Level, North Carolina.  She was born on December 23, 1919 in Sea Level, North Carolina to Alvah B. Taylor and Angeline Salter Taylor, the first of their five children.  She was predeceased on December 2, 2000 by her husband of 55 years, Harry Quinton Simmons, Sr., who was retired as a County Agent with NC Cooperative Extension.
She is survived by her sons, Harry Quinton Simmons, Jr. of Caswell Beach, NC and Alvah Taylor (Bud) Simmons and wife, Nina of Cornelius, NC along with her brothers Braxton Taylor and wife, Kathryn of Sea Level and Rodney Taylor and wife, Barbara of Morehead City, NC as well as sisters-in-law Signa Simmons Roberts of Newport, NC and Vernie Taylor of Burton, SC.  She was predeceased by her sister, Clara Belle Taylor McGirk of Sea Level and her brother, Eldred Gordon Taylor of Burton, SC.  She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mildred attended elementary and high schools in Atlantic, NC and graduated in 1940 from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) in Greenville, NC, majoring in education and music.  She was a public school teacher in the 1940’s in Newport, NC, in the early 1950’s in Raleigh and for most of her teaching career, during the 1960’s and 1970’s at North Henderson School in Henderson, NC where she was remembered by her students as being tough but much loved.  She retired from teaching in 1980 after 26 years of service.  She was a long-time member of the Alpha Delta Kappa professional teaching sorority.  She also lived in Snow Hill, NC and Windsor, NC in the 1950’s.
Mildred loved music.  She was known for being able to sit at a piano and play by ear most any song she had heard, as well as by reading the music.  She often played for school functions.  While in Henderson she was a loyal member of the Christine Jenkins Class at First United Methodist Church.  After her move to Snug Harbor in 2004, she enjoyed attending musical activities, Bible study and social gatherings.
The family expresses deepest appreciation to the devoted staff at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, many of whom were family to her.

Visitation will take place on Friday, December 16 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 2:00pm at the Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Harris officiating.  Burial will be next to her husband at Amariah Garner Cemetery in Newport, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Sea Level United Methodist Church, PO Box 170, Sea Level, NC 28577.
