Michael Rudolph Jones, affectionately known as “Mike” or as he would say “Big Mike” was born on November 13, 1949, in Morehead City, North Carolina. He was one of four children. born to the late Alexander and Cassie Jones. Mike was educated in the Philadelphia parochial and public-school systems and graduated from West Philadelphia High School. Following high school, Mike joined the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Vietnam War.
Upon his return from military service, he met Vernice Jordan and as a result of their union, Kimberly (Jordan) Jenkins was born. Mike later married Mary Julia Prioleau, as a result of this union Calix (Jones) Stewart was born.
In the 1980s, he returned to North Carolina when his father became ill and assisted his mother with the care of his father until he transitioned. Mike remained in North Carolina and later became caregiver for his mother until her transition in 2003. Mike found immense joy in spending time with his family. He traveled to Philadelphia and Charleston as often as he could to spend time laughing and joking with his daughters, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, family and friends. As he got older and couldn’t travel as much, he stayed connected. He spoke to each of his siblings at least once a day. Even though he was in North Carolina, he never missed a family gathering. Mike always knew the time and place of the gathering and made sure to call everyone’s phone until someone answered. He proceeded to talk with anyone and everyone he could as the phone was passed from one to another. Mike loved his family and never missed an opportunity to let them know. Mike always ended his calls and texts with “I Love You” and instructed you to give everyone in your household a kiss from him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters, Kimberly (Leon) of Harleysville, PA and Calix (Kenneth) of Charleston, SC; sisters, Myrna Jacobs of Chester, PA and Barbara Cobia of Philadelphia, PA; brothers, Alexander and Ronald (Lynn) of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren, Salina, Tamara, Shamar, Jaylyn and Kenneth, Jr.; two great-grandsons; special nieces and nephew (he affectionately referred to as his “other children”), Ivy (Keith), Annetta and Marc; special cousin/caregiver Maurice Harper; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, who were all special to him.
