Merton Hendrick

Ret. GySgt. Merton "Hank" Hendrick, 85, of Newport, passed away in his home, in the care of his family on the morning of Dec. 2, 2009.

He is survived by his sister, Pauline Madigan of Linesville, PA, his first wife, Marcia Wentworth Hendrick of Greenville, NC, their three daughters, Christie Louise Doodney of Queensland, Australia, Cynthia Marie Hendrick of Aurora, NC and Celia Anne Hendrick of Hookerton, NC; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Robert Hendrick and his second wife, Joyce Lee Hendrick.

Merton honorably served on active duty in the USMC for 26 years. He was a three war veteran who served in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. After retiring from the military, he worked for the NC State Ports Authority, Morehead City, NC for 12 years. In addition to serving his country and state, he also supported his community through his involvement with the Newport Moose Lodge and charitable donations to local organizations.

He will be laid to rest at Gethsemane Memorial Park Monday, December 7, 2009, at 1:00 pm.

The family will receive friends following the service at their home.
