Melvin E. Fleming, Jr., 75, of Newport, passed away Monday, December 4, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Newport Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Gary Carroll and Reverend John Cornett.
Melvin was born in New Bern, NC on October 23, 1942. He grew up in Newport, NC and graduated Newport Consolidated School in 1963. Melvin met Lavonne, the love of his life in high school and they married following graduation. They started a family in 1964 and raised three children in Morehead City, NC. Melvin was committed to family making sure that all knew of his support of them to achieve their highest potential.
Melvin was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a dedicated member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and always a member of various Eastern North Carolina hunting clubs he visited frequently. He loved all things Eastern North Carolina and was a lifelong Carolina basketball fan.
Melvin was a person of faith and lived life serving others. He was a lifelong member of Newport Baptist Church and spent many years as a deacon in the church.
His life work in the grocery business at the A&P and Food Lion in Beaufort, Morehead City, and Newport. He enjoyed interacting with the public and made many friends through his work. It has been said there wasn’t a stranger that Melvin didn’t know or have a smile and a joke for.
Melvin will be remembered by many for his open heartedness and good nature.
He will be missed greatly by his wife, children, grandchildren, other family and friends. His memory and the love he gave will be carried on forever.
He is survived by his wife Lavonne Fleming of the home; daughter Anita Fleming of Beaufort; sons, Rodney Fleming and wife Constance of Wilmington, Eugene Fleming and wife Debi of Richmond, VA; sister Iris Rice and husband Carroll of Morehead City; grandchildren, Samantha Fleming of Richmond, VA, Josh Fleming of Richmond, VA, Christopher Fleming of Wilmington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ruby Fleming.
Family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Newport Baptist Church.
