Master Gunnery Sgt. John R. Stewart, Jr., 86
Master Gunnery Sgt. John Robert Stewart, Jr., of Broad Creek, went to be with his loving Savior Thursday, November 25, 2010.
Services will be held 3:00 pm Sunday at White Oak Church of God. Entombment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park with full military honors.
He was born September 1, 1924, in Durham, NC, and raised in Henderson, NC. He married Irene Register in 1945. After the death of Irene, he married Velma Clark of Broad Creek, NC, in 1965. He was a career Marine serving 30 years, until his retirement in 1972. His tours included service in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was recognized on November18, 2008 in Jacksonville, NC, as a “Hardcore Warrior” for exemplary service. He was a member and elected Chaplain of the Morehead City ROMEO Veteran’s group. He participated in the Honor Flight in Washington, DC, September 2010, to dedicate a memorial for WWII veterans. A proud Marine, he led the Morehead City Veteran’s Day Parade for the past ten years.
He was a charter member of the White Oak Church of God in Bogue, NC. He was an active member of the church, serving in several ministries including the tape ministry, and the position of clerk for 30 years. He was a Godly man, faithful follower, and servant of Christ, sharing Christ’s love with others. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He never knew a stranger.
He is survived by his faithful wife of 45 years, Velma Stewart; sons Robert Stewart and wife Barbara of Broad Creek, John R. Stewart, III and wife Becky of Broad Creek, and Daniel Clark, Jr. and wife Gina of Broad Creek; daughters, Donna Mizelle and husband Charles of Broad Creek, Sherry Guthrie and husband Billy of Bogue, and Elaine Underwood and husband Kevin of Broad Creek; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Mary Dickerson of Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Stewart of Tifton, GA; brothers, Henry Stewart of Henderson, NC, and Charles Stewart of Concord, NC; sister, Ruth Fowler of Henderson, NC; and his parents, Una and John Stewart of Henderson, NC.
The family will receive friends 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Sunday at the Church.
