Mary (Morse) Stephenson

Mary Morse Stephenson, 95, of Newport, formerly of Morehead City and Beaufort, Carteret County, passed away Saturday, December 10th, 2016 at approximately 7:30 am, under hospice care at her home in Newport, Carteret County.

Her funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Tuttles Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Stevens officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

A native of Carteret County, she was born on 24 April 1921 in Wildwood, Carteret County, the daughter of the late William Ardell (Daddy) Morse of Carteret County and Lala Corbett of Wayne County, N.C. Mary was the 4th great-granddaughter (the last surviving Morse) of Joseph Morse who built the “Morse House” on Front-Street in Beaufort in 1771.

She is survived by her two children, daughter, Barbara Ann Lewis Mendoza of Beaufort and son, George F. Lewis, Jr. and wife, Sherri M. Lewis of Morehead City; five grandchildren, Timothy Bautista Mendoza and wife, Tiffany, Anthony Lewis Mendoza, Thomas Lewis Mendoza and wife Kathy, Teresa Lewis Mendoza Conner and husband Timothy R. Conner of Carteret County, and Michelle Mackenzie Lewis Fore of Tennessee; sisters, Lela Morse Lee, Dollie Morse Willis, and Nancy Morse Mason; six great-grandchildren; one niece, Velma; and three nephews, Harry Marcus, and Cecil.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George Franklin Lewis and her second husband, Eli Earl Stephenson, one great-grandchild, Christopher Lee Lewis and her granddaughter’s husband, Chadwick “Chad” Allen Fore.

The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home.
