Mary Leonard Richter

October 13, 1939 — March 20, 2019

Morehead City

Mary Leonard Richter, 79, of Morehead City, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Carteret Health Care.

There will be a Memorial Gathering held between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2019, at Munden Funeral Home. A private interment will take place at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

She was born in Wilmington, NC moving with her family to Morehead City. She spent her childhood in Morehead graduating high school from Morehead City High in 1957.  She married on February 15th of 1958, starting her life with her husband Larry in Falls Church, Virginia. She spent the next 35 years working for the Department of Defense, volunteering at the White House during the Carter administration, creating a preschool for 10 - 15 local children and crafting her way around the Northern Virginia area all while raising two boys involving herself in the PTA and being a loving, supportive wife. She retired and moved home to Morehead City in 1993, continuing her volunteer work with Friends of Fort Macon, PAWS and holding the position of Docent at the History Place. In addition to traveling the globe, she had a love for everything living, spending the majority of her retired time gardening and planting.

She was a kind spirit always more concerned about others than herself. She leaves a void in all of us that won’t be able to be filled. We will miss her smile, laugh and generous nature. We love you wife, mom, sister and friend.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Larry Richter of Morehead City; sons, David Richter and wife Nina of Seattle, WA, Jim Richter and wife Allyson of Greenville, SC; brothers, Jimmy Leonard and wife Darlene of Morehead City, Jerry Leonard and wife B.J. of Newport and Terry Leonard and partner Debby Boyce of Beaufort; grandchildren, Adelaide and Heywood; and niece, Jaime and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and Pearl Leonard and brother David.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at https://ww5.komen.org/ or Dept. 41831, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265.
