Mary Scarborough Llewellyn, 87, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Wake Assisted Living in Raleigh.
A celebration of her life will be held at Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. A small reception will be held immediately after.
After a long battle with dementia, Mary Scarborough Llewellyn finally decided to call it a day. Born and raised in Kinston, she graduated from Women's College (now UNC-G) in Greensboro, where she met her future sister-in-law and lifelong friend Mary Ann Barlow (now Scarborough). In 1951, she married her sweetie, Dick Llewellyn of Wilson. They set up camp in northern Lenoir County, and got to work establishing their family. Sharon was born in 1954, then Doug in 1955. While teaching 3rd grade at Teachers Memorial Elementary school in Kinston, she earned her Master's Degree from East Carolina College (now University). She later worked in the administrative section of Kinston Public Schools, and was a principal before the family moved to Raleigh in 1971.
Her first assignment in Raleigh was as principal of JW York Elementary. After a few years, she realized she was happier in the teacher role. She took up residence at Effie Green Elementary, forming young minds until she retired in 1989. Upon retirement, Mary and Dick moved to the family house on Bogue Sound, fixing it up proper. She spent those years building the property into a lush flower garden, and creating some of the most detailed, perfectly stitched wall hangings, jackets, vests, and anything else that could be created by sewing machine or needle. She loved looking after her cats Missy, Buzzy, and Stormy.
Near tragedy struck her in 2004, when she contracted Guillan-Barre´ Syndrome. Though she bravely survived that, it took a toll on her body. Shortly after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, she decided it was best to move into Carolina House of Morehead City, where she spent the next two years. She spent her last years in Raleigh, in the care of the good folks at Morningside, and Wake Assisted Living. We are especially grateful to Hospice of Wake County for comforting her in her final days.
She is survived by her son Doug, and his wife Rebecca, in Raleigh.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dick, and her daughter Sharon.
