Mary Ellen (Ward) Harden

Mary Ellen Ward Harden,79, of Morehead City, died Friday, August 26, 2011 after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon Thursday at Macedonia Christian Church, Hwy 17 South, Williamston, NC.Interment will follow at Martin Memorial Gardens in Everetts, NC.

Mrs. Harden was born in 1932 in Williamston to Simon James Ward and Minnie Perry Ward. She graduated from Williamston High School in 1950 and married L. Thomas Harden, Jr. also of Williamston. She and her husband made their first residence on the Harden family farm where they had two children, Mary Ann (Ann) and L. Thomas Harden (Tom), III. In the early 1960's the Hardens moved to Plymouth, NC where they built and operated the Thomas Harden Restaurant and Motel. After seeing her daughter graduate from Meredith College and her son from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she and her husband retired and moved to Carteret County.

Mrs. Harden is survived by her daughter Ann and her husband, Neil Whitford of Morehead City, her son Tom and his wife, Rebecca of Durham, her grandchildren, Meredyth Whitford, Robert Harden, Jessica Harden Womack, and Mary Ellen Whitford, and one great grandson, Percy Womack, IV. She is also survived by her sisters Thelma Manning (and her husband Mac Manning) of Williamston and Geraline Lilley of Virginia Beach, many nieces and nephews, and in-laws Jack Sullivan of Southport and Peggy W. Davis of Williamston.

Her husband predeceased her as did her parents, and her brothers Floyd and J.R., and her sisters Susie, Emma, Mary Virginia and Janice, and in-laws, Hettie Ward, Joe Melton and Elvin Lilley.

Mrs. Harden doted over her grandchildren and was involved in the daily lives of her granddaughters in Morehead City. She was particularly proud that all three of her granddaughters graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
