Marvin Everett Fick

Marvin Everett Fick, 73, of Newport passed away September 1, 2017 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.

No service is planned.

Marvin was born on June 3, 1944 in Santa Ana, California to the late Gilbert and Florence (Adams) Fick and was the oldest of seven children.  After his father’s discharge from the Army in 1944, Marvin and his parents moved back to Abilene, Kansas where he grow up on the family farm.

At the age of 18 Marvin enlisted in the United State Marine Corps and was sent to San Diego for Boot Camp and then on to school in Memphis.  He was later sent to El Toro in Irvine, CA where he met Sheryl “Sherry” Neff. They were married on April 17, 1965.  During his 27-year service in the United States Marine Corps, Marvin was stationed at MCAS El Toro in Irvine California, Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee, MCAS Cherry Point in Havelock, North Carolina, and MCAS New River in Jacksonville North Carolina as well as overseas in Vietnam, Japan, and the Philippines. He retired in 1989 as a Master Sargent.

After retiring from the Marine Corps Marvin held several different jobs including a position at Kmart where he was affectionally known as Mr. Marv by his co-workers.  Marvin was an avid bowler and bowled in several leagues at Carteret Lanes, the bowling alley on base and for a couple of years at MacDaddy’s. He also coached in the Saturday morning youth leagues for several years.

Marvin is survived by his five children, Katherine Franklin of Atlantic Beach, NC, Keith Fick and significant other Leslie Lewis of Newport, NC, Michael Fick and wife Kelly of Broad Creek, NC, Marvin Fick and wife Maribeth of Milpitas, CA, and Kathleen Fick of Newport, NC. He was also survived by 12 grandchildren: Anthony, Robert and Amanda Perez, Mikayla, Quentin, Brittanie, Jonathan, Brandon, Kiara, and Maliyah Fick, Emily (Fick) Pittman and husband Michael, and Michael Lewis. Marvin has 8 great grandchildren: Landon and Lanie Hill, Khalia and Khamony Lewis, Waylon Wallace, Vivian Perez, Corbin and Beau Pittman.  He is also survived by 3 brothers John Fick and wife Mary of Kipp, Kansas, Neldon Fick and wife Karen of Ellsworth, Kansas, and Mark Fick of Great Bend, Kansas, and 3 sisters Karen Wenger and husband Ronald of Salina, Kansas, Lynette Synder and husband Jim of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Marlene Frederick of Salina, Kansas as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Marvin is preceded in death by his wife Sheryl, parents Gilbert and Florence Fick, and granddaughter Rachel Perez.
