Martha "MERB" Elizabeth (Rowe) Blake

December 11, 1941 — August 24, 2012

Martha Elizabeth Rowe Blake, 70, of Newport passed away Friday August 24, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loved ones.

A memorial service will be held at the Saint James United Methodist Church in Newport, NC at 11:00am on Saturday September 1st, 2012 conducted by Pastor Tom Supplee.

Martha began her teaching career in 1964 teaching 8th grade in the Grifton School System.  In 1966, she began teaching Art Classes at three Craven County Schools until being hired by Stuart Daniels and teaching Art at Havelock High School until she retired in 2000. In 2009 she returned to teaching Art at the Havelock branch of Craven Community College, both day and evening classes. Martha was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority (1969), the NC Education Association and recently was inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Martha was a charter member of the American Business Women Association (1977) and the Evening Stars Garden Club (2010) along with Francis Boyd.  She also held officer positions with the Newport Bud and Shrub Club (2000) and the Rose Society of New Bern (2002).  As a national flower show judge, Martha judged the Onslow County Fair and NC State Fair for several years, as well as the second largest US flower show for three years in Atlanta, GA.  Martha was sponsor for the National Art Honor Society which provides scholarships for many students. Throughout her life, she has touched thousands of students, young and old.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years Richard Blake, son Rick, three sisters Carrie B. Rowe, Rachel Saltzman and Millie Rowe, and brother Charles Rowe; as well as many nieces, nephews, sorority sisters, special friends, and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Elizabeth Blake, her parents John Douglas and Sarah Frances Rowe, brothers Don Pinkney "Pink" Rowe, John Rowe and Adrian Rowe.

The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 pm Friday August 31st, 2012 at Munden Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the St. James United Methodist Church scholarship fund PO Box 250 Newport, NC 28570.
