Mark Edward Nelson, 63 of Atlantic, passed away just before day break on Thursday morning, April 18, 2019, at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City.
His memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Terry McInnis.
Mark was born Saturday, February 18, 1956 at the Sea Level Community Hospital to Adron and Helen Nelson. Mark was the third son to come into this loving home. Mark soon became the “baby” and was not only spoiled by his parents but also his two older brothers, Keith and Paul.
Mark attended Elementary School in Atlantic where he would foster friendships that would last throughout his life. Mark attended high school at East Carteret in Beaufort North Carolina.
In March of 1972, at the age of 16, Mark received his Eagle Scout Award. He joined the Crissie Wright Masonic Lodge, in Smyrna North Carolina where he would eventually hold the office of Tyler. He later became a Sudan Shriner in the fall of 2014.
Mark was a self-taught mechanic and loved working on vehicles. He was self-employed and the proud owner of “Nelson’s Garage” which was located in his mother’s back yard in Atlantic. This would be his employment throughout his adult life.
Due to Mark’s declining health, several years ago he moved from Atlantic to Beaufort, however anyone who knew Mark cannot dispute the fact that he loved his roots and ties to Atlantic. It has even been said in his younger, healthier days, there would be months he never left his home town.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Adron and Helen. He’s survived by his two brothers, Keith and wife Yvonne of Kinston and Paul and wife Fran of Williston; two nephews, Adron Nelson and wife Sharon, and Michael Nelson; three nieces, Courtney Nelson Braswell and husband Scott, Polly Nelson and Amanda Nelson; six great nieces and nephews, David and wife Lauren, Samantha, Garrett, Spencer, Griffin and Grady.
The immediate family would like to express their appreciation for the care and love shown to Mark by friends, family, and the healthcare providers, during his time of declining health.
Flowers are welcome or memorial donations can be sent to the charity of one’s choice.
