Newport, N.C. - Marion “Bob” Stoops, age 71, passed away on Monday, March 13th, at Carteret Health Care. He was born on May 21, 1945 in Dothan, AL, to Marion Stoops and McCarley Shepard. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Jack Stoops, W.A. Stoops, Houston Stoops, and George Stoops.
Remembered fondly as a loving husband, father, valued friend, and coworker, Bob Stoops will be sorely missed.
The family will conduct a memorial service, officiated by Pastor Kevin Clubb at Cape Carteret Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2017 and visitation will occur one hour prior.
Bob is survived by his wife of 38 years, Charlene, and six children: Brandon Stoops, Clinton Stoops, Chad Stoops, Shawn Durdin-Stoops, Helena Anderson, and Tina Chatterjee. He also leaves behind many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, June Whitehead.
Bob served in the United States Marine Corp as a Criminal Investigator and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After his service with the Marine Corp he joined the United States Army Reserves 824th Heavy Boat Transportation Unit. He was a correctional officer for NC Dept. of Corrections in Newport, NC. Bob was also the former Assistant Chief of Police and Head Detective of the Havelock Police Department. Bob’s professional career also included positions with Blue Bell, Henry’s Tackle, Sears, Belk’s, and as an armed messenger with Loomis Fargo. Bob also served as a former commander of the VFW Post 8986 in Newport, N.C.
