Marianne B. Hibbs, 82, of Newport, died Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta.
Her memorial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017, at St. James United Methodist Church in Newport with Rev. Susan Lindblade and Rev. Tom Supplee officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Marianne was born August 21, 1935, in Lumberton to Edward Griffin Baldwin and Mary Lee Carter Baldwin. Her father’s line of work, paving and road construction, forced the family to move frequently. Marianne attended a number of different schools. These included Pineland School for Girls, also known as Pineland Junior College & Edwards Military Institute, in Salemburg, where her aunt, Estelle Carter Crutchfield, was a housemother. Marianne later attended Newport Consolidated School in Newport and Cerro Gordo School in Cerro Gordo, where she graduated 12th grade. While living in Newport in September 1952, Marianne met her future husband, Louis, who had just returned home from U.S. Army service in Korea. The following day, Marianne and Louis went on their first date, a Saturday drive-in movie and a walk on the Triple S Fishing Pier in Atlantic Beach. That was followed by a Sunday drive to Shell Point on Harker’s Island, where Marianne said she’d never visited. Thus began their 65-year love story. Marianne and Louis were married June 21, 1953, in Cerro Gordo. Marianne worked as a teacher’s assistant at Newport Elementary in Newport for more than 20 years. She was active in St. James United Methodist Church in Newport for most of her life. She and Louis loved to attend musical gatherings with close friends and traveling with friends and family. Marianne will be remembered as gentle, kind, patient and caring. Always smiling, she brought joy into the lives of all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Louis Markham Hibbs of Newport; daughters, Mary Louise “Mary Lou” Kale and husband Samuel B. Kale Jr. of Newport and Nancy Leigh Anderson Haq and husband Arif Sungho Haq of Dunwoody, Ga.; two sons, Louis Markham “Mark” Hibbs Jr. and wife Victoria “Vicki” Cooper Hibbs, and James Edward “Jimmy” Hibbs and wife Jennifer “ Jenny” Hibbs, all of Newport; grandchildren, Samuel B. Kale III, Jennifer Anne Kale Styron, Carrie Leigh Kale Brickhouse, Robert Markham Hibbs, Jason Matthew Anderson, Ellis Lane “Ellie” Anderson, Kinsey Oneal Anderson, Simon Haq and Jacqueline Louise Hibbs; and great-grandchildren, Charles “Charlie” Kale, Riley Kale, Blake Leigh Brickhouse, Anderson Styron, and Emerson “Emmy” Brickhouse.
Marianne was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Phineas Haq, a brother, Edward G. Baldwin Jr., and a son-in-law, Matthew “Matt” Anderson.
