Mack David Overby, 72, of Williston, North Carolina, passed away on January 10, 2025, surrounded by friends and family at his home with the wonderful care of Gentiva Hospice of Swansboro.

Mack was born on May 2, 1952, in Smithfield, NC, the third of four sons born to parents William Craig (Possum) and Lois Overby. Mack always had hilarious stories to share about the antics he and his brothers could stir up.

Mack graduated from Triple S High School in Smithfield and went on to become a very successful Licensed General Contractor. To truly understand Mack’s humor, you would need to see one of his prized possessions. His framed copy of his certificate of graduation from Mrs. Ducks’ Kindergarten in 1958.

Mack always made it a point to share about the power of Jesus in his life with others. Few were the conversations when Mack wouldn’t point back to Jesus as the creator of all of his worldly successes.

Helping others was one of Mack’s favorite pastimes. He would give you the shirt off of his back, and go to the store to buy you more, as long as you promised to keep his altruism a secret. No one on earth knows the number of people he touched with his unending generosity.

Mack was an avid inshore fisherman and loved surrounding himself with like minded others. He also had great respect for commercial fishermen and the inherent knowledge they could share. Mack loved to talk, but he will also be remembered for being a mindful listener.

Mack and his partner Willie (his dog) could be seen daily grabbing a coffee at the Handy House early in the morning before taking their ride to the Oyster Creek launching ramp to enjoy the rising sun. One of Mack’s other endearing qualities was that he loved cats.

Mack and his bride Kim were a perfect team. They ran a very successful contracting business together that spanned numerous counties in North Carolina. Their company built and remodeled homes from 1972-2020. Their labor of love can be seen in Johnston, Wake, Wayne, New Hanover, Brunswick and Carteret Counties.

Mack and Kim were also the original owners of Davis Shore Provisions in Davis, NC. With Mack’s remodeling expertise and Kim’s eye for design and decoration, DSP became a beautiful and much loved addition to the community. They served the Down East area for several years offering a coffee bar, gourmet dipped ice cream, and nearly anything one would need for a gift or a little something for one’s self. Mack’s had a special “Amen Corner” in the store where several of the local men would meet for a Bible Study and a cracklin’ light roll most mornings. They also remodeled and ran the Davis Shore Fisherman’s Lodge for several years.

Mack is survived by his bride, Kim Overby of Williston, NC; sons, Brandon Overby and wife Shelly and Kyle Overby and partner Bill Demeritt; grandchildren, Bryson and Lellon Overby, Logan and Braydon Taylor, and Vivian Demeritt; brothers, Carlton Overby, and Thomas “Tee” Overby and wife Alice; godchildren, Sunnie Batson and Jessie Hill; and mother-in-law, Peggy Raper.

Also surviving are his nephews and nieces and their families including nephew, Donnie Overby and wife Delores and their daughter Laura Grace; nephew, Bryan Overby and wife Morgan and their family Cash and Katelyn; nephew, Matt Overby and wife Andrea and their sons Reid and Rhett; niece, Kim Tilghman and husband Dee and their sons Hunter and Justin; and niece, Amy Thornton and husband Chris and their sons Walker and Ryder.

Mack was preceded in death by his parents, William Craig “Possum” and Lois Overby; his first wife, Priscilla Overby; brother, William Criag Overby Jr.; sister-in-law, Mickey Overby; and father-in-law, OW Raper.

Mack’s legacy will go way beyond his immediate family. He left an indelible mark on all who knew and loved him. Without a doubt, the world is a better place for all who were ever blessed to have crossed paths with him. For those who truly “got” Mack, they were gifted a loyal friend, a person with whom you could agree to disagree and still say, “I love you and night, night” at the end of every conversation.

Night, night Mack. Until we meet again.

A Celebration of Life Cookout will be held on Saturday, March 1st at Mack and Kim’s Home in Williston beginning at 2 PM.
