Mabel Isabella (Russell) Swinson
October 7, 1932 — July 17, 2017
Mabel Isabella Russell Swinson, 84, of Newport, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at her home.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, July 21, 2017 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Reverend Robbie Strickland. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
She was born and raised and lived her entire life in Carteret County. In addition to her own children, Ms. Mabel helped raise and provide childcare for children in the community, and some of those children would grow up and return to her for help in raising their own children. She raised multiple generations of children and many people not related would call her Grandma.
Ms. Mabel was an active member of Broad Creek Church of God, and would take leadership role in fundraising. Her favorite hobbies included gardening, cooking, and collecting lighthouses and bells. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and care taker to many.
Mabel is survived by her daughters, Judy Hall and husband Roger of Clarendon, Betty Reynolds and husband Harold of Newport; sons, Curtis Swinson of Newport, Glenn Swinson and wife Ellen of Charlotte; sisters, Alice Cherry of Morehead City, Gertrude Paul of New York, and Ann Hawkins of Wallace; brother, Ronnie Russell of Lumberton; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Charles H. Swinson; daughter, Carolyn Swinson; parents, Daniel and Polly Russell; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Family will see friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
