Nell was born on August 20, 1928, on Harkers Island, NC, to the late Terrell R. Scott and Lurena Hancock Scott. On May 22, 1946, at just 17 years old, Nell married her beloved Samuel Davis. Shortly after their marriage in July of that year, she found peace in her faith and accepted the Lord as her Savior, later becoming sanctified in March of 1947. Nell's devotion to the Lord shone brightly in all aspects of her life. She and Samuel were active members of the congregation of Free Grace Church and Grace Holiness Church, where she dedicated herself to serving in various ministry roles.
Nell’s heart and love are reflected in her words, written in 2002, “I was saved the 31st of July 1946 at Buddy’s house and sanctified by Baptisim of the Holy Ghost in March of 1947. I can truly say the Lord has kept me all along the way. I have never had one thought of giving up or turning back. I have been praying that all my children would be saved before it’s too late. Some are already saved. I want everybody to know about this great salvation. Now I’m 73 years old. It gets sweeter as the years go by.”
A passionate gardener, Nell poured her love into caring for her garden and tending to her flowers. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was awarded the yard of the year accolade. Not only did she enjoy the labor of love, but she found joy and contentment in admiring the beauty she had cultivated. During the holiday season, Nell's yard transformed into a winter wonderland with beautiful Christmas decorations that earned her yet another award for her dazzling displays.
Cooking brought Nell immense joy, and she delighted in preparing delicious meals for her family and friends. In the kitchen, she bonded with her granddaughter Gina, passing down cherished family recipes and her culinary skills.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her son, Sammy Ray Davis of Gulf Port, Mississippi; grandchildren, Gina Raquel Blackwood (Sam), Samantha Rae Davis Ellis (Ben), Elizabeth Jordan Yeomans (Angel), and Kourtney Alyson Davis; great-granddaughter, Kaili Johnell Leggatt; niece, Nettie Lou Styron; and nephews, Milton Eddie Scott and Charlie Scott.
In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel Davis who passed away in 1989; sister, Nola Dare Scott; brother and sister-in-law, Milton Scott and Edna Earl Brooks Scott; daughter, Lilly Lurane Davis Yeomans; daughter-in-law, Anita Warren Davis; grandsons, Justin Michael Davis and William Terry Gaskill and wife June Sammons Gaskill; niece, Priscilla Rose Lewis; and nephew, Teddy Scott.
