Mr. Whitacre was born on February 20, 1930. He was the only child of the late Dr. Harry Stephens and Louise Harrison Whitacre and was raised in Martinsburg, West Virginia. At an early age Steve became an accomplished violinist, playing in concert halls from Washington to Philadelphia and was considered a child prodigy. Steve also played the piano and in later years the bass fiddle, which became his instrument of choice. Jazz was his favorite music and he would say he could stay out all night playing his big blond bass.
Steve graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy in 1948. In 1950 he joined the United States Air Force and served honorably until he was discharged in 1954. While in the Air Force he met and married the love of his life Constance Joye Whitacre who preceded him in death. Stationed at Keesler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi, they met at the USO dance and were married for 49 years. Steve and Connie raised four children while working in the real estate appraisal business for over 35 years until their retirement to Emerald Isle, North Carolina in 1996. After Connie's death, Steve met and moved with his companion of the last eight years, Joyce Bell, to Margate, Florida where they enjoyed the Florida sun and each other’s company along with Harry the Turtle.
Survivors include his children Kimberly (Matt) Willoughby of Garner, NC, Elizabeth Whitacre of Newport, NC, Scott Whitacre of Clayton, NC, and Steve Whitacre of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
