Linda Pearl (Wood) Collins

January 27, 1944 — January 16, 2014

Morehead City-Linda Wood Collins died on January 16, 2014.  She was born Linda Pearl Wood on January 27, 1944 in Iredell County, the second daughter of the late Julius Johnson Wood and Pearl Chilton Wood.

Linda graduated from Gardner-Webb College in 1964 with a degree in Business and Accounting.

On May 7, 1966, Linda married Byron Theodore (Ted) Collins at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church in Farmington, NC.  They would have celebrated 48 years of marriage this year.

Linda and Ted started their married life together in Gastonia, but later moved to Kinston.  They opened Southeastern Catalog Showroom which later evolved into Southeastern Diamond and Gift.  Linda and Ted grew their business while making many friends far and wide.  For them, the Kinston community was like no other.

Together, Ted and Linda were active members of Westminster United Methodist Church in Kinston and new members of First United Methodist Church in Morehead City.

One of Linda's passions in life was gardening.  Nothing made her happier than to have a spade in one hand and a tomato plant in another.  This was a lifelong passion that culminated into Linda completing the Master Gardener course in 2006.

She was also a fabulous cook, caring wife, mother and grandmother.  Her friends were varied and many.  She was devoted to them and each one meant the world to her. If we could describe Linda in just a few words, she was kind, never spoke a cross word, a natural beauty and very, very special.

She is survived by her husband, Byron Theodore (Ted) Collins, daughter, Jennifer Collins Willis of Chapel Hill, and her son, Wesley Anderson Collins and wife, Darley Bomar Collins of Morehead City.

Linda is also survived by her sister, Patsy Wood Shore of Advance and brother-in-law Reggie Davis of Greenville.  She was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Kay Collins Davis and brother-in-law, Floyd Granville Shore.

One of the greatest joys in her life was her grandchildren, who called her “Lolly”.  Her grandchildren are Mary Mattocks Willis, Cason Howell Collins and Tyler Anderson Collins.

She also had a special relationship with her four nieces and nephews, Carol Hadley of Roxboro, Jeff Shore of Advance, Matt Davis of Fayetteville and Alison Davis of Greenville.

A celebration of Linda's life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Morehead City on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.  A committal service for immediate family will follow the service at the church columbarium.  All friends and family are invited to a reception celebrating Linda's life following the service, in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Carteret General Hospital / Raab Clinic Fund, 3500 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557 or First United Methodist Church, 900 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC. 28557.
