Les was born in East Bernard, Texas. he was raised by his beloved grandmother on a nearby farm. At the age of 20 he joined the US Army and served in Viet Nam. he was honorably discharged in 1973. After leaving the Army he was hired by Cherry Point as an aircraft sheet metal mechanic. He spent several years at Cherry Point and then transferred to NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA. He later returned to Cherry Point and retired from there in 2007 with over 30 years of employment. Les was also a member of the Army Reserves Unit out of Morehead City and served with the boat company there for a number of years. He later joined the US Air Force Reserves of Virginia Beach, VA and served with Red Horse Unit until he retired. He started his own home improvement business which he ran for over 20 years specializing in roofing and installing vinyl siding.
Each spring he looked forward to planting his backyard garden. His excitement over watching things grow was contagious and he loved to share it with everyone. He also had a talent for baking home made, melt in your mouth, yeast rolls. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, he would make and bake hundreds of rolls and deliver them to friends and family. That brought him tremendous joy.
He was a devoted husband, a tower of strength for his children, a proud and loving grandfather, and a faithful friend. He was a gentle giant and his passing has left a void in the lives of all of his family and friends. We cherish the memories and he will never be forgotten.
