Lessie Mae (Styron) Smith

January 9, 1925 — February 16, 2013

Lessie Mae Styron Smith was born on January 9, 1925 to Courtland Vanvert and Lina Murphy Styron.

Funeral Service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday at Davis Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Mercer officiating. Interment will follow at Murphy Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church Sanctuary.

Lessie Mae grew up in Davis, NC, graduating from Smyrna High School in 1942.   During World War II, like other girls during this time, she wanted to help in the war effort.  She and a close friend headed for Greenville, NC to train to become Radio Operators.  However, they became homesick and left a few days after arriving, never completing their schooling.

Lessie Mae married Alonzo Thomas Smith, Jr., of Beaufort on July 3, 1955.    Into this union their one and only child, a son, Tommy, was born.  Lessie Mae moved around with her husband while he was in the United States Air Forces.  After Tom retired from the Air Force because of health reason, they moved back to her beloved Davis where they would spend their lives together until Tom’s death in 1994.

Lessie’s love for the Lord was evident to all who knew her.  She was a lifelong member of Davis Free Will Baptist Church.   Even during the last few years when her health was beginning to decline, her faith never wavered.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Smith, her parents, Courtland and Lina Styron, and brother, Lloyd More Styron.

She is survived by her son, Tommy Smith and wife Cecila, granddaughter, Allison Smith Guthrie and husband Joshua all of Harkers Island, sisters-in-law, Lorna Peters of Morehead City and Pauline Smith of Beaufort, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lessie will be missed by all who knew her.  The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers and support during this difficult time.
