Leo Peter "Phil" Phillimeano, 86, of Bogue Sound Shores of Gales Creek, Newport, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Carteret General Hospital.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, December 7, 2014 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Phillimeano was born in Mount Vernon, New York to the late Dominic Phillimeano and Catherine Lynch Phillimeano of Vermont. He joined the Marine Corps in 1945. When WWII ended, Phil's unit was sent to North China to stabilize the area; thus, the creation of the "China Marines". He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, China Service Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. His military service of 20 years encompassed Marksman's Badge, Personnel/Recruiting and Evasion, Escape and Survival Training as position of Staff Sergeant. Leo's military career ended in 1966, which allowed him to pursue other ventures such as maintenance manager of Pine Knoll Townes, Atlantic Beach.

Leo dressed in uniform, met his pen-pal, Joanne Weins of St. Clair Shores, Michigan whom he married in 1951. Phil had a fulfilling life with his military career, a marriage of 50 years, and raising six children. The Phillimeanos lived in Gales Creek since 1963, and could almost be considered natives of Carteret County. He was an avid reader, historian and undeniably politically motivated. His love of political bantering tied in with current events was hallmark of L.P. Phillimeano.

He is survived by his daughter, Roxanne K. Taylor, D.V.M. and husband, Rick Taylor of Beaufort; son, Timothy Phillimeano and wife, Sandra of Sacramento, CA; son, Robert Phillimeano and wife, Sid of St. Augustine, FL

;daughter, Judy Phillimeano and husband Darryl Williams of Wake Forest; and the youngest son, Leo P. Phillimeano, Jr., AKA "Butch" and wife Teena of Raleigh; grandchildren, Cesalea Phillimeano, Mia Phillimeano, Ian Phillimeano, C. Cody Taylor, Patricia Phillimeano, Kelsey Lee Phillimeano, Patrick Williams, Sarah Ann Williams, Jilliana Phillimeano and Caroline Phillimeano.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife Joanne in December 2001 and his son, Dominic John Phillimeano in 2012.

The family will receive friends following the service.
