Leland Willis Wiggins

February 2, 1931 — October 27, 2011

Leland Willis Wiggins was born 2nd of February, 1931, and was the first child to grace the home of Benjamin Ricks Wiggins and Carrie Etta Willis. Leland was raised on their farm in Marshallberg and this is where he came to love tractors and engines of all sizes.


Leland loved each of his sisters as they began to join this family. Gladys, Edna, and Clara all looked up to their big brother and loved him as much as he loved them. Because of this love at the age of seventeen Leland joined the Navy in hopes of helping his parents support the family.

His time in the Navy would anchor a love for the ocean and engineering for the rest of his life. Leland's jobs and schooling would go on to include: running a gas station, US Merchant Marines, NOAA and the Ferry System. He also attended the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation in Daytona Beach, FL.

While Lee was in Florida for work he met and married Lily Louise Porter better known as Lou. They would have three handsome sons: Benjamin Ricks, Martin Douglas, and John Ulyesses (Jack). Their love did not last. Lee found the love of his life Bonnie Jean Wingfield and was married on the 22nd of February, 1967.

Leland is survived by his wife Bonnie Jean: sons Martin and wife Julianne of Jacksonville FL, Jack of Fernadina Beach FL,grandson Christopher of Jacksonville FL,step-son Butch Smith of Rhode Island, sisters Gladys Lewis and husband Fella of Marshallberg, Edna Fulcher of Sea Level, brother in-law Clem Willis of Harkers Island: three nephews and three nieces (one which is named after him).

Leland is proceeded in death by his parents, his son Ricks and Sister Clara.
