Lela Elizabeth Elliot Gray

Lela Elizabeth Elliott Gray, 76, of Newport, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Mitchell Parker. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Lela was born in Newport, NC and remained a life-long resident.  She spent her early married life raising her three children, and later worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Carteret General Hospital, retiring in 1990.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  She was renowned for her cooking, and even won blue ribbons for her coconut cakes.

She is survived by her husband, Jesse “Cobb” Gray of Newport; daughters, Christine Ramey with husband Tony Ramey of Newport, NC, Tammy Bik with husband Brian Bik of Amsterdam, NY, Patricia “Patsy” Turner with husband Will Turner of Newport, NC; “special son”, Kevin Marvel; brother, Jay Garner; and grandchildren, Lindsay Cooley with husband James Cooley, Douglas Marvel, Ashleigh Bik, Jessica Bik, Willie Turner, Melissa Noonan, and Sarah Noonan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Hughes Elliott and Annie Bell Joyner; sister, Brenda Faye Elliott Greer; and brother, Alan Garner.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at Munden Funeral Home.
