Kenneth Edward "Pete" Pedersen of Newport passed away on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.
Pete, a native of Montana, was 77 years old. He is survived by his wife Betty Pedersen of fifty-five years, three children; Kenneth Pedersen Jr. and wife Sheila of Morehead City, Terre Willis and husband Rodney of Newport, and Karen Pechie and husband Bob of Newport; five grandchildren Jeremy Pedersen and wife Stacey of Beaufort, Jodie Willis and Kelli Willis of Newport, Jared Pedersen of Morehead City, and Travis Willis of Newport: two great grandchildren Willis and Kendall Pedersen of Beaufort: one sister Betty Nelson and husband Jerry of South Dakota: two brothers Bill Pedersen and Dennis Lee of Montana: and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Eddie and Thelma Pedersen and a sister Sharlene Oakley.
Pete served his country proudly in the Marine Corps for twenty years and served two tours in Vietnam before retiring in 1973 as a Master Sergeant. With his service in Vietnam he was awarded the Purple Heart. While serving in the Corps he flew a plane in the John Wayne movie "In Harm's Way". Pete retired from NADEP in 1998. He owned his own plumbing business in Newport for many years and also worked at Newport Motor Company for several years. Pete enjoyed reading, watching westerns, and shopping on QVC.
The family will accept friends and family on Tuesday, September 18, from 6-8 at Munden Funeral Home. On Wednesday, September 19 a memorial service will be held at the Newport Church of God on Mann St. at 1:00 officiated by Bishop Terry Hayes followed by a military honors at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to St. Jude's Hospital 332 N. Lauderdale St. Memphis, TN 38105.
