Kathleen Bowen, 83, Newport

Kathleen Varnadore Bowen, 83, of Newport went to be with her Lord Thursday, May 12th, 2011.

Services will be 11:00 am Monday at Newport Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Carroll officiating. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.

The 6th daughter of Benjamin and Louise Varnadore, she was born July 15th, 1927 in Blackshear, Georgia.  She moved to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia in 1944 and found the love of her life.  She married Radford Bowen on August 15th, 1945.  Upon his discharge from the U.S. Navy, they moved to his home state of North Carolina, where they eventually bought a small farm on what is now the Newport Loop Road.  Here they raised 5 children together.  She was a long time member of Newport Baptist Church, where she served her Lord in many capacities over the years.   Her gentle spirit and love of her family were her greatest strengths, and the source of strength and comfort for us all in the last four months.

She is survived by four sons, David Bowen, Sr., Carl Bowen, Greg Bowen and wife, Debbie, and Jeff Bowen; and daughter, Jane Cayton, all of Newport;  10 grandchildren, David Bowen, Jr, Lee Bowen, Sabrina Bowen, Melissa Cayton, Greta Davis, Sammy Weeks, Debbie Morris, Donna Greene, Earl Weeks, Michelle Smith and husband, Don;  8 great-grandchildren, Jennifer Reynolds and husband, DJ, Aprille Weeks, Devin Smith, Regan Tell, Jayden Smith, Austin Davis, Brooke Davis and Timothy Barrett Bowen;  3 great-great grandchildren, Tanner Reynolds, Chloe Weeks and Landon Reynolds.

She joyfully went to join her loving husband, Radford, after 102 long days of being apart. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Timmy Bowen, and her daughter-in-law, Edna Player Bowen.

The family will receive friends 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday at the church.

Flowers are welcome or donations can be made to Hospice of Carteret County, PO Drawer 1619, Morehead City, NC 28557.
