Justin was born on July 8, 1975, in Ilion, New York to Victor and Linda Wood. During and following high school, he worked in the family tire business. He honorably served in the United States Coast Guard, and he was proud to have been a part of the Presidential Honor Guard. After moving to Morehead City, he continued work in the tire business. He also worked at the Channel Marker Restaurant, where met his soulmate, Christi Hales. He later graduated from Pitt Community College with a degree in Radiography, and he worked as a radiographer at both Vidant in Greenville and Beaufort Hospitals.
Justin married Christi in 2006. Christi loved him unconditionally. Together they built a strong foundation of family that extended to everyone they knew. In any crisis, they were the first on the scene.
The couple was blessed with three adoring daughters, the joys of his life. Skyler taught him how to love as a father, and her personality is like her mother’s. Sydney has Justin’s caring and tender heart. Saylor has Justin’s wit and can make any situation lighthearted.
More recently, Justin had been afforded the privilege of working as a full-time dad. He loved being a father and embraced being a part of every aspect of the girls’ lives. From his hair-braiding expertise, to chauffeuring them around while playing Disney songs, to teaching vacation bible school, to just having fun, Justin demonstrated love to his girls every day. He embraced this part of his life with the same enthusiasm he did all aspects of life. He was affectionately known as “the fun dad” by the children he impacted, perhaps due to his favorite attire, his kilt, but more likely because he was always ready to show love and be a kid himself.
The fun times were always wherever Justin was. He was known for greeting family with a big bear hug and authentic excitement that made them feel like they were the most important people in the world.
As a huge sports fan, Justin cheered for the Big Orange of Syracuse and followed Carolina Basketball and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved the water, boating, fishing, off-roading in his Jeep, ice cold Coors Light, busting his brothers’ chops, and making people laugh. Justin loved life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Christi; daughters, Skyler, Sydney, and Saylor; parents, Victor and Linda Wood of Winterville, NC; brothers, Jason Wood of Bend, Oregon, Jonathan Wood and wife Lindsey of Wilmington, NC and Jerrod Wood and wife Courtney, of Farmville, NC; mother-in-law, Bernice Hales of Newport, NC; sister-in-law, Carla Fransen and husband Clay of Raleigh, NC; and nephew and nieces, Jeremy, Mckayla, Fisher, Isla, and Madelyn. Countless friends are also devastated by this loss.
Justin was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Billy Hales; his paternal grandparents, Edward and Mary Wood; and maternal grandparents, Roy and Joyce Backman.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gramercy Christian School, 8170 US 70, Newport, NC 28570, American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr., Greenville, NC 27834, or Take A Kid Fishing Foundation, TAKF Foundation, Attention Teresa Holcombe, P.O. Box 1191, Morehead City, NC 28557.
